Today I was playing $1/2 NL Holdem at Wheeling Island Casino in West Virginia.  I play there frequently, because it is the closest casino to my home.  They only offer very low stakes $1/2 and $2/5 blinds for no limit.  Anyway I decided to buy-in for $120 today.

I started out great catching good cards, and making plays at just the right times.  I won my way up to $390 in a matter of 25 minutes!  Then I was dealt AK of clubs in first position.  I decided to limp in with it since the table was pretty aggressive.  I knew the pot would be raised.  The player on the button made it $15 to go.  I just called his bet, and all the other players folded.  The flop was 3h, 4d, 8d.  I check and he bets $25.  At this point I am certain he has a pocket pair.  So I decide to make the call and try to represent a flush or straight on the turn if the right card comes.  The turn card was 6d.  This would make a flush, a straight, or even a straight flush.  So I bet $40 and he calls instantly!?  The river card was a 9c(total blank).  So I fire $75 into the pot.  He thinks it over for a few minutes and says "I know I'm beat, but I want to see it." and callse me anyway.  He only had pocket 10's and took me for $155 by calling a river bet that had him thinking he was just donating money to me.

The moral of this story is bluffing at such low stakes can be a bad idea even if it appears any smart poker player would have to fold.  People at lower stakes are more apt. to make what should be tough calls, because of the lower cost!  I had a read on this specific player, and he seemed to be a solid overal poker player.  That's the only reason I made this play in the first place.  I have a new opinion of him now lol.  So be careful bluffing at the lower levels in the poker room.  Know your opponents and read the situation carefully!  Best of luck to you all in developing your own poker game.  I'll catch you at the tables.

I'm Sure all of you poker enthusiasts out there know what a continuation bet is.  So no point in defining the term.  Is this something that should be done everytime you make a raise preflop?  Of course not.  You must know the other players at your table.  Pay attention to who is calling your raises the most often and who is aggressive.  If it is a player who hasn't called a preflop raise all night and you miss the flop....  You may want to consider checking your option on the flop.  He may be holding AA or KK.  If he bets into you and you have no pair and no draw go ahead and fold once in a while.  This will help with your overall table image and let you take down more pots with continuation bets later on in your poker session.  You want your table image to be "Tight Aggressive" not maniac!
